Two unfinished white horse-head masks drying in a workshop

Before the paint

In the making

These unfinished horse heads show the sculptor's stage. A bamboo frame is woven first, then layered with cloth soaked in clay, and shaped by hand.

Once dry, the surface is smoothed and primed white — the blank canvas onto which the painter will bring the character to life.

Horse masks appear in battle scenes and royal processions, carrying heroes and kings across the stage.
