The divine eagle
Garuda
Garuda is the king of birds and the eternal vehicle of Lord Vishnu. In Vaishnava lore he is born of the sage Kashyapa and Vinata, and wins the nectar of immortality from the gods to free his mother from bondage — a tale of devotion, courage, and strength.
On the Bhaona stage, Garuda appears whenever Vishnu or Krishna must be carried swiftly into battle or rescue. The mask's sharp beak, wide eyes, and towering crown let the audience recognise him instantly, even from the back of a crowded namghar.
Makers build the form on a bamboo frame, layer it with cloth and clay, and finish it with bright natural-toned paints. The golden crown signals Garuda's divine rank.
