Performance portrait
Hanuman in the field
This portrait shows the mask where it truly belongs — on a performer. The flowing jute hair catches the evening light by the river, echoing the Brahmaputra landscapes of Majuli.
Sattriya masks are lightweight so actors can dance, leap, and speak through them for hours. Eye openings are carefully placed so performers can see while the character's eyes stay expressive.
Documenting masks in performance is central to the Index: it records not only the object but the living practice around it.
