Rakshasa in performance

The Demon

Rakshasas are the demonic adversaries of the epics — shape-shifters, giants, and tyrants who threaten dharma until a hero restores order.

Demon masks are the most dramatic of the Sattriya repertoire. Exaggerated fangs, glaring eyes, and wild manes are designed to thrill audiences, especially children, and to make the eventual victory of good unforgettable.

Larger demon forms can be built as cho mukha — full-body masks that tower over the performer and require several people to animate.
