The noble vulture

Jatayu

Jatayu, an aged vulture and friend of King Dasharatha, sees Ravana carrying Sita away and fights him alone in the sky. Mortally wounded, he survives long enough to tell Rama what happened.

His sacrifice is one of the most moving moments of the Ramayana, and Bhaona audiences greet his entrance with reverence.

These two masks were painted for the same production, showing how makers keep characters consistent across a cast.
